O-Sensei

Morihei Ueshiba

1883 - 1969

Wellington Aikido Club (affiliated with Aikido Shinryukan and New Zealand Aikikai) provides aikido training for men and women of all backgrounds and experience. Aikido Shinryukan is the national organisation established by instructor Nobuo Takase Shihan (7th Dan) in 1984. With his guidance and teaching, we strive to promote and further develop aikido as a means of recognciling agression wthout violence. Along the way, people learn to become more aware of their balance, posture and how they interact with others.

We conduct our trainings within a challenging, but friendly environment and welcome students of any age. We currently have two locations within Wellington, and two others being planned.

The Art of Aikido

Developed by O Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) as an efficient and extremely effective Japanese martial art, Aikido exploits the natural turning motions of joints to throw, immobilise or pin an opponent. Utilising these circular movements the defender uses the opponents own force to control the attack. Emphasis is on a non-violent resolution to physical conflict.

The fundamental principles of Aikido is to evade, redirect or neutralise an attack with movements that are flexible and rational.

The practice of Aikido should coordinate the mind, body and spirit, and has the added benefits of increasing awareness, improving fitness and flexibility.
